According to reports, a Kia Sedona operated by a 75-year-old woman was traveling south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 29 near the 115 mile-marker when it collided with an Infinity QX8. The Kia then went off-road, and the impact caused the Infiniti to strike Kia Sorento.

When first responders arrived on scene, they found the Sedona driver deceased, and three occupants from the Infiniti seriously injured and transported them to the hospital. The identity of the deceased driver has not been released, and authorities are investigating the accident.

Wrong-way crashes are among the most serious types of collisions—not only because of their high-speed impact potential but also because they often reflect a breakdown in awareness, vehicle control, or both. When a vehicle travels the wrong direction on an interstate, the investigation can’t just focus on the outcome—it must get to the root of how that path was possible in the first place.

1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
In a multi-vehicle wrong-way collision, investigators need to reconstruct the full sequence of movements—not just at the moment of impact, but well before. Where did the wrong-way entry occur? How far did the vehicle travel? Was there any attempt by the driver to correct course? These questions should drive a complete review of the vehicle’s path, with detailed mapping and analysis to determine whether this was a momentary error, a sustained loss of awareness, or possibly even a medical episode.

2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
While wrong-way driving is often attributed to human factors, mechanical failures can’t be ruled out—especially when an older vehicle is involved. A steering or electronic system malfunction, or a sudden loss of visibility due to lighting or display issues, could lead to disorientation. A complete inspection of the Kia Sedona should determine whether any systems were compromised or contributed to the wrong-way entry or its continuation.

3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Onboard data from all vehicles involved—especially the wrong-way driver—can help reconstruct not just the speed and path of the vehicle, but whether it responded to any driver input along the way. Was there any braking? Steering correction? Did collision avoidance systems activate in any of the vehicles struck? These data points are essential to understanding the moments before impact and whether any vehicle systems failed to engage as expected.

When a vehicle ends up traveling the wrong way at highway speed, the answers can’t stop at what happened—they have to get to why it happened, and whether anyone saw the warning signs before it was too late.

Takeaways:

  • Wrong-way collisions require full reconstruction of the vehicle’s entry point and movement.
  • Mechanical or electronic system failures must be ruled out through a detailed inspection.
  • Vehicle data can confirm if any braking, steering, or warning systems were activated.
