Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Single-vehicle rollovers are among the most serious types of crashes, and they almost always leave behind unanswered questions. A truck leaving the roadway and overturning doesn’t happen without a cause, but getting to the bottom of why it happened takes more than a surface-level look.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
When a vehicle ends up on its roof, investigators should be asking whether the loss of control was sudden or gradual. Did they map the scene to see if the truck swerved, or did it drift off the road? Were skid marks measured, and was the driver’s condition leading up to the crash considered? Not every investigation digs that deeply, especially when there are no other vehicles involved. But without that careful work, key details can be missed.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
Pickup trucks carry weight differently than smaller cars, and a mechanical or tire failure can trigger a rollover in an instant. Problems with steering, suspension, or even electronic stability control may not leave obvious evidence at the scene. If the truck wasn’t inspected thoroughly, those possibilities could go unrecognized, leaving the assumption that driver error alone caused the crash.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Modern trucks often have onboard computers that record speed, braking, and steering inputs just before a crash. Pairing that data with GPS records, phone activity, or even nearby surveillance cameras can help show whether distraction, a sudden maneuver, or a system failure played a role. Without pulling that information, investigators are left with only partial answers.
Rollovers like this don’t just happen by chance. The real cause often lies in details that only careful investigation can uncover. If those details aren’t sought out, the true story risks being left untold.
Takeaways:
- A rollover crash requires detailed reconstruction to understand the vehicle’s movements.
- Mechanical or stability system failures in the truck could be a factor.
- Onboard data, phones, and cameras may reveal key evidence about what really happened.
