Accident Report

March 17, 2026, a woman was injured due to a car accident at approximately 5:30 p.m. along Potranco Road (F.M. 1957).

According to authorities, two people—a 39-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman—were traveling in an eastbound Mazda 3 just past the Holliman Parkway/Blue Larkspur intersection on Potranco Road when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a collision occurred between the front-end of an eastbound Malibu and the rear-end of the Mazda.

The woman reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision. It does not appear that anyone else was hurt. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Most people glance at rear-end accidents and just assume that driver error was the cause. Statistically, that is a good bet. Human error does play a role in the majority of car accidents. However, I’ve been in this line of work for over three decades. In that time, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of rear-end car accidents. I’ve seen plenty of cases where the investigation turned up evidence of underlying factors that had nothing to do with driver error.

To be transparent, I don’t know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I simply want to suggest a hypothetical. What if the Malibu was suffering from a throttle issue or brake failure at the time of the wreck? There would have been little to nothing the driver could have done in the moment to avoid a collision, in that case.

An in-depth vehicle inspection done by a trained professional in a laboratory setting would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that might otherwise fly under the radar. Unfortunately, these types of inspections are not routinely done in most car accident investigations; a special request might have to be made. Should the authorities fail to get one done, a third party investigation can always take that step, instead.
