Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

I have to wonder if the lack of public information about this crash is due to authorities being tight-lipped, or if they’re not up to the task of conducting a thorough investigation. Folks tend to assume authorities have crack forensic teams on a crash scene to get all the facts, but many departments don’t really have the resources to do thorough accident reconstructions.

Unfortunately, accident reconstruction just isn’t a high priority for a lot of departments. Officers can generally handle simple or straightforward accidents, and they can look into things like cell phone use or drunk driving. However, getting the full story often involves ruling out mechanical issues and road design flaws, investigating negligent alcohol providers who may have illegally over-served a driver, checking for manufacturing defects with the vehicles, etc.

Without proper tools and special training, those and other important details may slip through the cracks. I hope Austin authorities will take the time and care needed to ensure that doesn’t happen.
