Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle suddenly stops on the interstate and is struck from behind, it raises more questions than it answers. High-speed roads don’t leave much margin for error, and the focus should be on uncovering why the lead vehicle stopped and whether the following driver had any chance to avoid the collision.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
Rear-end collisions can look simple, but they often aren’t. Investigators should document skid marks, measure impact damage, and reconstruct the sequence of events to determine how much time the following Dodge Ram driver had to react. Just as important is determining why the silver Dodge stopped in the first place. Without that analysis, the cause of the crash remains incomplete.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
If the silver Dodge Ram stopped suddenly, a mechanical failure could be the reason. Engine stalling, brake lock-up, or transmission problems can cause a vehicle to halt without warning. On the other side, if the following truck experienced a brake issue or tire problem, that too could explain the inability to avoid impact. Without thorough inspections of both vehicles, these possibilities remain open.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Both trucks likely carry event data recorders that capture speed, braking, and throttle input in the seconds before the crash. Phones, dash cameras, and nearby traffic cameras may also hold valuable evidence. If investigators don’t secure this information quickly, critical details about why the crash unfolded the way it did may be lost.
Highway crashes rarely happen without a chain of causes. The key is whether investigators trace that chain fully, rather than stopping at the surface explanation.
Takeaways:
- It’s not clear whether investigators determined why the silver Dodge Ram stopped on the interstate.
- A possible defect in either truck may not yet have been ruled out.
- Event data recorders, dash cameras, and nearby surveillance could provide key insights.
