How Did This Accident Occur?
When it comes to accidents that happen in the middle of the night, most people are quick to blame the ubiquitous “driver error”. That’s understandable, considering the fact that human error plays a role in most car accidents. However, I am not so quick to jump to that conclusion. Over the last three decades, I’ve seen plenty of accidents in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation.
I don’t want to give the impression that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation does, by the way. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, the accident could have been caused by something gone wrong with one or the other of the involved vehicles.
On top of that, there is the fact that one of the vehicles overturned. Since the rollover tests that car manufacturers are required to pass do not actually do a very good job of simulating real-world scenarios, I would be interested to know whether or not a design flaw with the vehicle that rolled played a part in that outcome. Why? Because it is possible that the victims’ injuries would have been less severe had it managed to remain safely upright.
Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get in-depth inspections done on the involved vehicles. That way any mechanical malfunctions, product defects, or design flaws that had a hand in the wreck won’t be allowed to fly under the radar. After all, the people affected by this accident—including the loved ones left behind by the deceased—deserve to be given real answers backed by solid evidence. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
