Initial statements from Houston Police officials say the crash happened off the Greenhouse Road exit ramp along Interstate 10 in west Houston.

According to officials, a 16-year-old was driving a Kia Sportage along the freeway at the time. That vehicle lost control and crashed along the Greenhouse exit ramp. Due to this, a 15-year-old riding in the vehicle sustained fatal injuries. The driver and a 24-year-old passenger had injuries.

At this time, additional details about the accident remain unconfirmed.

How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s possible that something common led to this crash, such as unsafe speeds or distracted driving. However, it’s important to know that investigators aren’t letting the driver’s age affect their investigations. I’ve seen too many cases over the years where authorities jumped to conclusions because a driver was young and inexperienced. Even if those conclusions end up being right, it only risks letting something important slip through the cracks.

After a serious crash like this, families deserve to know it’s the evidence that is telling the story. That means investigating everything from speed to road conditions to alcohol to vehicle defects to poor lighting and signage. Likely or not, the important thing is that the victims and families involved in the crash know there has been a fair and complete accounting of the facts. Right now, it’s simply too early to tell if authorities have given the crash that sort of unbiased examination.
