Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After any serious car accident, it’s important to make sure investigators are being thorough. Despite what many people think, there is not some automatic process for handling car accident investigations. The quality varies from department to department—even officer to officer. I can’t count how many times I’ve had calls from victims and families who relied on authorities to tell their story only to end up with more questions than answers.
That’s why following up early on can be helpful. If it seems authorities are able to answer all questions adequately, it’s probably because they’re taking the investigations seriously. But if there are gaps in the story and details aren’t adding up, that may be a sign that the crash would fare better in the hands of independent accident reconstructionists.
