When I see reports like this, my first thought is that I hope investigators are able to determine exactly what led to the crash. Intersection collisions like this one are fairly common, but that doesn’t mean they are always straightforward. To truly understand what happened, there are three key questions that must be answered.
The first question is whether authorities conducted a thorough investigation. Law enforcement officers will typically document the scene, gather witness statements, and try to determine which vehicle had the right of way. However, the level of detail in these investigations can vary depending on available resources and expertise. In cases involving turning vehicles, it’s important to examine whether traffic signals or signage were a factor, whether one driver misjudged the other’s speed, or if road conditions played a role. Without a detailed examination, key pieces of information may be overlooked.
The second question is whether anyone has considered the possibility of a vehicle defect. While many assume that driver error is the primary cause of intersection crashes, mechanical failures can and do play a role. Brake malfunctions, steering issues, or problems with a vehicle’s advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), such as automatic braking or lane-keeping technology, could have influenced one or both drivers’ actions. These factors require a forensic examination of the vehicles before they are repaired or scrapped, yet they are often dismissed too quickly.
The final question is whether all electronic data related to the crash has been collected. Each vehicle’s electronic control module (ECM) may hold valuable data about speed, braking, and steering input leading up to the crash. Investigators should also check for any available traffic camera footage, surveillance videos from nearby businesses, or dashcam recordings that might help clarify what happened. Additionally, cell phone records could be relevant if distraction was a potential factor. Unfortunately, this kind of evidence is often overlooked unless someone specifically requests it.
Until these questions are fully answered, it’s too soon to assume what caused this crash. Ensuring a thorough investigation isn’t just about determining responsibility—it’s about identifying all contributing factors, providing answers to those affected, and, if necessary, taking steps to prevent similar accidents in the future.
