Waelder, TX — May 26, 2025, one person was killed and two people were injured due to a car accident at approximately 5:00 p.m. along Interstate Highway 10.
According to authorities, a 19-year-old mm Andice, Texas, was traveling in an eastbound Hyundai Kona on I.H. 10 in the vicinity just west of County Road 422 when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Kona failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It was consequently involved in a collision with an eastbound Jeep Compass occupied by a 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman. The Kona may have overturned over the course of the accident, according to reports.
The Andice man reportedly sustained fatal injuries due to the wreck. Both occupants of the Jeep suffered minor injuries, as well, reports state. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle drifts out of its lane and someone loses their life, it’s not enough to note what happened—we have to examine why. The critical details often lie in the lead-up to the crash, and whether those moments were fully explored by investigators.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
A fatal lane departure on a high-speed roadway demands a precise reconstruction. Did investigators map the vehicle paths, measure distances to impact, and analyze whether the Hyundai Kona took any evasive action? Was the possibility of driver fatigue, distraction, or medical distress considered? These aren’t guesses—they’re answers that only come from a methodical review of the scene. And with many agencies stretched thin, the depth of that review can vary significantly.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
A modern vehicle suddenly leaving its lane isn’t always driver error. A tire blowout, steering system failure, or a malfunction in lane-keeping assist can all contribute. The Kona may have overturned, which makes a mechanical inspection even more critical before damage from the crash itself obscures signs of failure. If no one examined the vehicle before it was cleared or salvaged, an important part of the story may already be lost.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Both the Kona and the Jeep Compass likely contain valuable onboard data. Did investigators retrieve event data to confirm the Kona’s speed, steering input, or braking just before the collision? Were any alerts or system warnings triggered? That information can reveal whether the driver attempted to correct the lane departure—or if the vehicle itself gave no warning. On a major roadway like I-10, nearby dash cameras or traffic monitoring systems may also hold footage that clarifies how the crash unfolded.
Crashes like this don’t just call for answers—they demand them. When someone dies and the cause isn’t obvious, what’s uncovered in the investigation can make all the difference in understanding what really happened—and preventing it from happening again.
3 Key Takeaways:
- Fatal lane-departure crashes require full reconstruction, including analysis of pre-crash driver behavior.
- Mechanical failures like steering issues or system malfunctions must be ruled out with a detailed inspection.
- Vehicle data and traffic camera footage can confirm whether the driver or the vehicle was in control.
