When I hear about a multi-vehicle crash involving five vehicles, multiple fatalities, and several injuries, it’s clear that the stakes are incredibly high—not only for those involved, but for the community as a whole. Crashes of this scale demand answers, not assumptions. The only way to begin understanding what happened and why is by focusing on three essential questions.
First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? In incidents involving several vehicles, there are many variables at play: traffic flow, vehicle speed, road conditions, and the actions of multiple drivers. A proper investigation requires accident reconstruction, detailed mapping of the crash scene, and interviews with as many witnesses as possible. This kind of work is both time- and resource-intensive. Given the early-morning timing and the complexity of the scene on West Risinger Road, it’s critical that investigators take the time needed to piece together each vehicle’s role in the sequence of events. However, not every agency has access to the tools and expertise required to analyze a crash of this magnitude to its fullest extent.
Second, has anyone examined whether a vehicle defect contributed to the crash? It’s easy to focus solely on driver behavior in a multi-vehicle crash, but with five vehicles involved, the possibility of a mechanical failure must be considered. Brake failures, steering malfunctions, or even a tire blowout in one vehicle could create a chain reaction. In modern vehicles, electronic driver assistance systems—like automatic emergency braking or lane-keeping assist—also have the potential to misfire. Unless the vehicles involved are preserved and inspected by qualified experts, these kinds of failures may never come to light. In many cases, vehicles are towed away and quickly disposed of, erasing the opportunity to investigate this vital angle.
Lastly, has all electronic data related to the crash been collected? Each of the five vehicles likely contains an engine control module (ECM), often referred to as the vehicle’s “black box.” These devices can provide crucial information about speed, braking, and driver input in the moments before and during the crash. In addition to ECM data, there may be dashcam footage, surveillance video from nearby businesses, and cell phone records that could clarify how the crash unfolded. The challenge is that this evidence is time-sensitive. If not collected and preserved quickly, it may be lost or overwritten, compromising the ability to understand the full picture.
When a crash results in multiple lives lost and others seriously injured, it’s not enough to accept that it happened—we must understand why it happened. The families affected by this crash deserve more than vague reports and speculation. By asking the right questions and ensuring the right steps are taken, we can help ensure that every piece of evidence is considered and that the answers, however complex, are found.
