Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

While details aren’t confirmed right now, authorities mentioned alcohol as a possible factor in the crash. Despite what folks may think, this doesn’t necessarily make an accident like this open-and-shut. This is because alcohol-related crashes can often involve an outside party responsible for contributing to the accident: an alcohol provider.

Simply put, alcohol providers in Texas can face criminal investigations, fines, license suspensions, and liability if they unlawfully over-served someone who is obviously intoxicated, and it leads to people getting hurt. While all of the focus tends to stay on the drivers in these situations, it’s important negligent alcohol providers also answer when their actions lead to people getting hurt. The question is if authorities here looked into that or if they’re letting someone off the hook.
