How Did This Accident Occur?
If authorities are correct in their suspicions that alcohol was involved in this crash, then obviously that would be a significant factor to follow up on. Although, it wouldn’t be enough to just but all of the blame on a 17-year-old, even if they made a mistake. It’s obviously illegal to provide alcohol to a minor, so investigations would have to find out where the alcohol came from. That’s especially true if there was a local establishment that sold the alcohol, as that would be a huge red flag that establishment might regularly engage in that kind of behavior. Texas law says people and establishments can be responsible both for the unlawful service of the alcohol and for contributing to an accident caused by a minor they provided alcohol to. Did that happen here?
That said, I have seen crashes where authorities suspected something serious like drunk driving only to end up being wrong. I’m not going to treat any of this as fact unless I see clear evidence confirming the initial reports. For all anyone knows, this crash involved a medical condition, a vehicle defect, road hazards, tire failure, or even just distracted or fatigued driving. The goal should always be to gather the facts and to let the facts speak for themselves. Whether authorities are doing all that, or if independent investigators need to step in to double check what they overlooked, my hope is this crash gets a thorough investigation that leaves no stone unturned.
