Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

I’m looking at images of the stretch of road where police say this crash occurred. What I’m seeing concerns me. To be clear up front, I don’t know anything more about this crash than what’s already public. But what I’m wondering is, what was this semi-truck doing at the time of the crash, and why was it facing eastbound?

I bring this up because saying the Freightliner was going eastbound suggests either that it was coming from a street that likely would have had a stop sign, it was pulling out of a nearby business, or it was backing into a business while facing eastbound. In pretty much all of those situations, I would expect authorities to mention the truck’s behavior, as it would be incredibly relevant to the events that led to a driver being seriously injured.

The fact I don’t see much information beyond the direction of the semi-truck raises concerns. Did authorities not give this crash the attention it deserved? Were they rushed to move on to other responsibilities? Do they lack proper equipment or experience to investigate things like road design, truck electronic data, and laser-mapping of the scene? Or, did they simply withhold additional details from the public while giving the victim and their family a more complete explanation behind the scenes?

This is why I tell folks there really are no simple or straight-forward truck wrecks. It’s not always about the cause of the crash being complex. Sometimes, it’s making sure those factors actually get the proper attention that presents the challenge.
