Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

A head-on collision between a tanker truck and a minivan raises important questions about why the two vehicles ended up in each other’s paths. My experience handling truck accident cases tells me that crashes like this are rarely as simple as they first appear, and a proper investigation should go beyond the immediate impact to determine all contributing factors.

One of the first things investigators should examine is whether either vehicle crossed the centerline and, if so, why. Was there a mechanical failure, such as a tire blowout or brake issue, that caused a loss of control? Did road conditions — such as wet pavement, debris or poor visibility — play a role? These details matter because they help establish whether this was an unavoidable situation or one that could have been prevented.

Another key issue is road design. Some two-lane roads have narrow lanes, sharp curves or limited sightlines that make it easier for vehicles to drift out of position, especially for large trucks with wide turning radii. If this stretch of Indian Hills Road has seen similar crashes in the past, that could indicate a need for better signage, road markings or other safety improvements.

The tanker truck’s involvement also raises questions about load stability and stopping distance. Tankers carry liquid cargo that can shift within the tank, making sudden maneuvers more difficult. Investigators should look into whether the truck’s speed and handling were appropriate for the road conditions and whether proper braking distance was maintained.

While authorities continue their investigation, a thorough review should consider not just driver actions but also mechanical conditions, road design and traffic flow to ensure that every factor contributing to this crash is fully understood.
