Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks like this, families generally have the same concern. They want to be sure they’re getting the full story. People generally want to trust that authorities are going to get them answers, but sometimes there are still doubts. In my experience, it can be helpful for families to be proactive and ask key questions about the investigations. That way, they can gauge the responses authorities have.

One of the first questions to consider is whether authorities had the time and tools to conduct a proper investigation. When departments are stretched thin or called to multiple scenes, it’s not uncommon for accident reconstructions to be rushed or incomplete. Without thorough documentation—like vehicle position, impact angles, or roadway evidence—critical facts may never come to light.

Next, has anyone looked into whether a vehicle defect might have contributed to the crash? Mechanical failures such as steering malfunctions, brake problems, or tire issues can cause a driver to lose control. Additionally, if seatbelts or airbags failed to protect the occupant as they should have, that could explain the severity of the injuries. These concerns can be missed if the vehicle isn’t inspected before it’s salvaged or destroyed.

Finally, has all available electronic data been preserved? Most modern vehicles record key information like speed, braking, and steering inputs leading up to a crash. When paired with other evidence—like cell phone records or nearby surveillance footage—this data can provide much-needed clarity. But this evidence is time-sensitive and may disappear if not secured quickly.

Generally speaking, if authorities are able to provide satisfactory answers, it’s probably because they did good investigations. But if their responses come up short, then it’s possible authorities have come up short. That’s when there may need to be steps taken to have another set of eyes look over the details.
