How Did This Accident Occur?

Most people, when hearing about accidents that happen in the middle of the night, are quick to blame driver error. It’s a safe bet, considering that human error plays a role in the majority of accidents, statically speaking. But I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. That is why, as a general rule, I don’t jump to conclusions.

To be clear, I’m not insinuating that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to point out that, hypothetically, something other than driver error could have been behind the collision. For example, what if the pickup truck or the 18-wheeler had a problem with the steering mechanism? Or maybe tire failure was a factor. Honestly, vehicles are such complex machines, the list of possibilities goes on and on.

In-depth vehicle inspections done on the pickup and the 18-wheeler would bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role. These types of inspections—done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting—are not routine in most accident investigations, so a special request might have to be made. If the authorities fail to get one done, then a third party investigation can take that step, instead. That way nothing important falls through the cracks.

In the end, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of how it happened and why things turned out the way they did. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation just can’t provide that kind of clarity.
