Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Anytime a crash involves a school bus, people naturally worry about the safety of those involved. While reports indicate that only the minivan driver was hospitalized and a child was evaluated as a precaution, the key question remains: what caused the crash? Determining that requires looking beyond just the scene itself.
One of the first things investigators need to determine is which vehicle had the right-of-way. Did one driver fail to yield? Was someone distracted? Did either vehicle make a sudden maneuver? Witness statements, traffic camera footage and possible dashcam video from the bus could help clarify what happened.
Speed is another factor worth considering. School zones and roads near bus routes often have lower speed limits, and the minivan driver’s injuries suggest a notable impact. Investigators should review any available engine control module (ECM) data from the bus to see how fast it was traveling at the time of the crash and whether the driver attempted to brake or swerve.
Another issue is visibility. Morning traffic can be chaotic, especially around school bus routes. Were sun glare, congestion or obstructed views a factor? Did either driver have a clear line of sight before impact? These details matter in understanding how the crash unfolded.
At this point, there isn’t enough information to say what caused the crash. But if authorities don’t look beyond the immediate wreckage — by examining vehicle data, camera footage and driver behavior — important details could be missed. A thorough investigation is necessary to determine exactly what went wrong and whether this crash could have been prevented.
