The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a northeast bound Ford F-150 pickup truck occupied by a 55-year-old woman failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly veered left of center, entering the oncoming lane of traffic. There, it was involved in a collision with the oncoming Silverado.

Jason Clifford and the woman from the Ford reportedly suffered serious injuries over the course of the accident. Brittany Clifford also sustained more minor injuries, according to reports. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When I see reports of a crash like this, my main concern is whether Brittany and Jason Clifford, as well as the other people involved, will get the answers they need about what happened. A head-on collision like this raises obvious concerns, but in my experience, these cases are often more complicated than they initially seem. That’s why it’s important to examine three key questions when investigating any serious crash.

The first question is whether authorities have conducted a thorough investigation. Law enforcement will likely document the scene, take witness statements, and try to determine why the Ford F-150 veered into oncoming traffic. However, important details can sometimes be missed. Were there any roadway conditions, such as poor lighting or debris, that contributed? Was the driver of the Ford experiencing a medical emergency or reacting to something on the road? Did officers have enough time and resources to reconstruct the accident properly? Ensuring a complete and accurate investigation is crucial to understanding the full picture.

The second question to ask is whether anyone has looked into the possibility of a vehicle defect. A crash like this—where a vehicle unexpectedly veers out of its lane—raises concerns about possible mechanical failure. If the Ford F-150 experienced a steering or brake malfunction, or if a tire failure caused the driver to lose control, those could be critical factors in understanding what happened. Unfortunately, vehicle defects are rarely investigated unless someone specifically pushes for that possibility to be explored. A forensic examination of the Ford could help determine whether a mechanical issue played a role in the crash.

Finally, it’s important to determine whether all relevant electronic data has been collected. Modern vehicles store critical information about speed, braking, and steering inputs leading up to a crash. The engine control modules from both trucks may hold key insights into the moments before impact. Additionally, surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras could provide visual evidence of what happened. Even cellphone data might be relevant if distraction played a role. The sooner this evidence is secured, the more useful it will be in clarifying the events leading up to the collision.

At the end of the day, answering these questions could be essential to understanding what really happened and why. A thorough examination of all three of these issues—including the quality of police investigations, possible vehicle defects, and electronic data—is the least that can be done to ensure that those affected by the crash receive the clarity they deserve.
