Single-vehicle crashes may seem straightforward, but experience has shown they can be just as complex as multi-vehicle accidents. The challenge is that they often don’t receive the same level of scrutiny, and authorities may be more focused on looking for blame than answers. That’s why it’s important to consider a few key factors.
Did authorities have the time, tools, and training to fully investigate? Officers don’t always have the resources for a detailed reconstruction, which can lead to overlooked details. Were road conditions, visibility, and possible evasive maneuvers properly examined? If not, key evidence may have been missed.
Did they check for possible vehicle defects? Mechanical failures—such as brake malfunctions, steering issues, or sudden power loss—can cause a driver to lose control. Additionally, seatbelt or airbag failures could have made injuries worse than they should have been. Was the vehicle inspected before any critical evidence was lost?
Did they preserve all available electronic evidence? The vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM) likely holds data on speed, braking, and steering inputs before the crash. GPS records, cellphone data, or nearby surveillance footage could also provide valuable insights. Were investigators proactive in securing this information?
These questions can help people gauge if their situation is be treated fairly. If authorities can provide clear answers, it’s likely because they’ve been thorough in their investigations. Otherwise, if they come up short, it could be a sign that there needs to be more thorough investigations to get clear answers.
