According to officials, 77-year-old Brenda Graves was in a Honda HR-V going eastbound on Trinity. Ahead, there was reportedly a tractor-trailer waiting to turn left onto westbound lanes, and the trailer was blocking both eastbound lanes of travel. In doing so, Graves’s vehicle crashed into it. Graves was seriously injured in the accident.

Authorities did not say if there were any pending charges or citations. It is possible there were extenuating circumstances that could change things, but nearly every crash like this I’ve dealt with ended up being the truck driver’s fault. Blocking lanes of travel is inherently dangerous, and experienced commercial truck drivers are generally able to avoid blocking lanes of travel, especially where approaching motorists might have reduced visibility due to the morning sun. The fact that didn’t happen here makes me wonder what was different about this truck driver’s sense of judgment.
The reason I say that is because a lot of commercial truck drivers who make mistakes were inevitably going to do so because of their working environment. Many companies out there encourage drivers to cut corners and rush to meet unreasonable deadlines, leading to incidents like this one. Alternatively, some companies hire inexperienced drivers and fail to train them properly. Others may hire drivers with a history of reckless behavior, ignoring the risks just to get trucks out there on the roads working.
Too often, folks just assume these crashes are always about the drivers. Even authorities tend to limit the scope of their investigations to a crash scene. This often allows reckless trucking companies off the hook, and they can continue putting lives at risk so long as no one puts them on the straight and narrow. The question now is if authorities are being thorough enough to find out not just what happened here but also if there are steps that can help prevent it from happening in the future.
