Those three—all of whom were traveling in the same vehicle together—were 47-year-old Brandon Glasscoe, 43-year-old Arthurian Watkins, and 20-year-old Manessa Naval. Ingham County, MI — November 3, 2024, four were killed and seventeen others were injured in a multi-vehicle truck accident at about 11:40 p.m. along I.H. 96.

According to authorities, the accident took place in the westbound lanes of Interstate Highway 96 in the vicinity of the exit for Stockbridge Road.

It appears that there was slow traffic in the area in the time leading up to the wreck. Officials state that, for as yet unknown reasons, an 18-wheeler failed to appropriately slow for the traffic conditions; it collided with several other vehicles as a result. Preliminary reports say that fourteen vehicles were involved in the fiery crash in addition to the rear-ending truck.

Two women, ages 20 and 43, along with a 47-year-old man who had been in one of the involved vehicles—a Chevy Trax—suffered fatal injuries. Another man—age 29—who had been in a Ford F-150 was also killed. Seventeen other victims reportedly suffered serious injuries, as well; they were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When accidents like this happen, it’s easy for people to assume they’re simply the result of bad timing or a single moment of inattention. However, based on my experience, catastrophic crashes involving large trucks and multiple vehicles require a thorough investigation to uncover every contributing factor.

One critical question investigators will need to address is why the 18-wheeler didn’t appropriately adjust its speed for the slow-moving traffic. Large trucks require more time and distance to decelerate safely, which makes attentive driving and safe following distances essential. Investigators will need to consider factors such as whether the driver was distracted or fatigued, as well as potential mechanical issues with the truck’s brakes or other systems. Given the fiery nature of this collision, it’s also crucial to examine the truck’s cargo and fuel systems, as certain loads can increase the risk of severe outcomes if a collision occurs.

If the truck was operating under a commercial company, it’s essential to assess whether the company met its safety obligations, including proper vehicle maintenance and driver training. Ensuring drivers are prepared to manage speed and spacing, especially in areas prone to sudden traffic changes, is a fundamental responsibility of any trucking company. Lapses in these areas could indicate shared responsibility for the wreck.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to consider every factor to ensure that those impacted by the accident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
