Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When crashes like this one occur, it’s natural to focus on the immediate collision and assume it stems from a simple mistake. However, in my experience, accidents involving passenger vehicles and 18-wheelers often reveal deeper issues requiring careful investigation to uncover.

Why did the pickup truck collide with the rear-end of the 18-wheeler? Was the truck stopped or moving unusually slowly in the travel lane? Were proper precautions, like hazard lights or reflective triangles, in place to warn oncoming drivers of the semi’s presence? On the other hand, was the pickup driver distracted, fatigued, or unable to see the truck in time to react? These questions highlight the importance of gathering evidence like dashcam footage, vehicle data, and witness accounts to piece together the sequence of events.

The role of the trucking company must also be examined. Trucking companies have a duty to ensure their vehicles are in safe working condition and that their drivers follow strict safety protocols. If the truck was improperly stopped or had mechanical issues, that could point to lapses in maintenance or oversight. Additionally, companies are responsible for training their drivers to handle emergencies or road conditions safely and to minimize risks to others.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
