In their statements, authorities allege that the 19-year-old Dodge driver was under the influence of alcohol. If that’s true, then it’s always concerning that someone under the legal drinking age got their hands on alcohol. There are certainly many ways they can do this, but the obvious concern is a local alcohol provider unlawfully sold it to them.
Here’s the main reason that concerns me. Folks may think that an alcohol provider serving someone who is under the legal drinking age might call for a slap on the wrist, and that’s that. But investigations into that could reveal all kinds of reckless behavior. I’ve handled hundreds of cases against alcohol providers for their role in serious accidents. Establishments that serve minors are often breaking all kinds of rules, and this can expose them to potential criminal investigations, license suspension, and liability if their actions contribute to people getting hurt or killed. Is that something authorities are looking into here?
