Woman Killed in Bicycle, Truck Accident on Hampshire Street in Cambridge, MA

It appears that a 24-year-old Cambridge woman was on a bicycle at the time going along Hampshire Street. At Portland, details say a truck going the same direction attempted to make a right turn across the bike lane, hitting the woman. As a result, the woman sustained fatal injuries. It’s unclear if authorities plan to file charges.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

This is the second fatal accident in Cambridge involving a bike and a truck I’ve written about just this month. Last time, I noticed there was a lot of concern regarding unique lights for motorists versus bicyclists. Here, though, I have to wonder if any kind of road improvements really would have helped.

The most up-to-date images of the intersection I can find show clearly marked bike lanes and just one set of traffic lights for all traffic. If the vehicles here were going in the same direction, does this mean that the truck driver simply turned right across the bike lane without checking to make sure it was clear? If so, I would think the public would be calling for more answers about this driver’s actions, who had the right-of-way, and how avoidable the collision was, if at all.

Road improvements are an important discussion, but they can only do so much when the drivers on those roads aren’t being safe. Maybe the truck driver did everything they could to ensure something like this wouldn’t happen, but the current details I’m seeing raise far too many red flags to ignore.
