Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a head-on collision between a commercial truck and a passenger vehicle occurs, the key question isn’t just what happened, but why it happened. In my experience handling truck accident cases, wrecks like this rarely occur without multiple contributing factors that need to be examined.
What caused the Silverado and Mack truck to collide? Head-on crashes are among the most severe types of accidents, but reports don’t indicate which vehicle left its lane or why. Did one driver misjudge a turn? Was there a mechanical failure, distraction, or an attempt to avoid another hazard? Investigators should review dashcam footage, witness statements, and vehicle positioning to determine how the initial collision happened.
Did the Dodge Ram have enough time to avoid the crash? After the initial impact, the Silverado was struck again, which raises questions about whether traffic conditions allowed the Ram driver enough time and space to react. Investigators should examine speed data, braking patterns, and other factors to determine if additional elements contributed to the severity of the wreck.
Did broader issues contribute to the wreck? Trucking companies are responsible for ensuring their drivers are properly trained and that their vehicles are well-maintained. If a company ignored safety regulations, put an unqualified driver behind the wheel, or failed to maintain its fleet, those issues could be relevant in understanding why this crash happened. Investigators should review company policies, driver history, and past safety violations to determine whether broader issues played a role.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is finding answers. Even if it takes an independent investigation to gather the right evidence, it’s critical to examine every factor to ensure those affected by the crash get the clarity and closure they deserve.
