Dallas, TX — September 21, 2024, 58-year-old Barbara Roberts was injured in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 35E in Dallas County.

Authorities say the accident happened around 6:20 p.m. on the 200 block of South R.L. Thornton Freeway (I-35E) near Colorado Boulevard. Preliminary investigation suggests Roberts was driving a Toyota Camry north on the highway in the far left lane when the car seemingly lost control for unknown reasons. It veered left into the nearby barrier, then rebounded right and passed through all northbound lanes before it hit the barrier on the other side. After the second impact the car came to a stop.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Seeing that this accident involved just one vehicle, I can’t help but feel a little concerned. In my experience those crashes aren’t always treated with an open mind or appropriate care by the public or even in some cases by authorities. Folks are quick to assume the driver did something wrong even though there are many reasons a vehicle can lose control—some of which would have been wholly out of the victim’s hands.

So how thoroughly was this situation examined? Officers said conditions were clear and dry, but could something in the road have punctured a tire on the car? Could it have had a mechanical failure or defect that sent it off-course? Did the driver have a disabling medical episode of some kind? Is it possible another vehicle ran her out of her lane but left the scene? What story does the electronic “black box” data from the car tell—or did no one look?

I’m not suggesting that thorough investigation would reveal anything shocking; I just think crash victims deserve nothing less than maximum effort. That means carefully looking into even less-likely possibilities, if only to rule them out. Police investigations don’t always get that detailed, as there are always other demands on their time. If the victim of this crash feels there’s more to say besides “failed to drive in a single lane,” who’ll help her tell her story?
