UPDATE (February 24, 2025): Recent reports have been released which clarify certain details pertaining to this accident. According to these reports, Aymee Ruiz was the individual traveling in the westbound pickup truck in slowing traffic. The pickup truck was rear-ended by a cement truck that had allegedly failed to control its speed. The impact caused the pickup truck to overturn, coming to a stop resting on its left side where it reportedly caught on fire. A policeman and a fireman had been in the vicinity of the wreck when it happened and were able to extricate Ruiz from the burning truck. Five other vehicles—making a total of seven—were involved in the crash, according to reports. Ruiz and three additional people were apparently injured. More information is not currently available. Investigations continue.
Mesa, AZ — February 18, 2025, one person was injured in a multi-vehicle truck accident at approximately 7:00 a.m. along U.S. Highway 60.
According to authorities, a pickup truck was traveling westbound on U.S. 60 (Superstition Freeway) in the vicinity of Val Vista Drive when the accident took place.

The pickup truck was apparently slowing for traffic conditions in the area. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a collision took place between the rear-end of the pickup truck and the front-end of a cement mixer truck. The pickup truck reportedly caught on fire over the course of the accident.
The woman who had been inside was extricated from the wreckage by emergency personnel who had been nearby when the accident took place. After being freed from the aftermath, the woman was transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive treatment for the reportedly serious injuries she incurred due to the crash. Reports also state that, while five other vehicles were involved in the chain reaction crash, she was the only one who was hurt.
Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a cement mixer rear-ends a slowing pickup truck, causing a fire and a multi-vehicle crash, the key question isn’t just what happened, but why it happened. In my experience handling truck accident cases, rear-end collisions involving heavy commercial vehicles often have multiple contributing factors that need to be examined.
Why didn’t the cement truck stop in time? Cement mixers are heavy vehicles that require more distance to slow down, especially in stop-and-go traffic. Was the driver following too closely? Were they distracted, fatigued, or otherwise not paying full attention? Investigators should review dashcam footage, phone records, and hours-of-service logs to determine whether driver inattention or an unsafe following distance played a role.
Was the cement truck’s speed appropriate for conditions? Even if the driver wasn’t distracted, traveling too fast for traffic conditions can make it difficult to stop in time. Investigators should analyze speed data, braking patterns, and traffic flow to determine whether the truck was operating safely.
Did mechanical failure contribute to the wreck? Brake problems, worn tires, or other equipment failures can make it harder for a heavy truck to stop. Investigators should conduct a post-crash inspection and review maintenance logs to determine whether poor vehicle maintenance played a role in the crash.
What caused the pickup truck to catch fire? While vehicle fires can sometimes occur in severe crashes, they may also indicate mechanical issues or poor vehicle design. Investigators should determine whether the fire was the result of the impact itself, a fuel system failure, or a defect in the pickup truck’s construction.
Did broader issues contribute to the crash? Trucking companies are responsible for ensuring their drivers follow safe driving practices and that their vehicles are properly maintained. If a company ignored maintenance schedules, failed to train drivers in defensive driving, or pressured drivers to stay on aggressive schedules, those failures could be relevant in understanding why this crash happened. Investigators should review company policies, safety records, and past violations to determine whether broader issues played a role.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is finding answers. Even if it takes an independent investigation to gather the right evidence, it’s critical to examine every factor to ensure those affected by the crash get the clarity and closure they deserve.
