Harris County, TX — September 24, 2023, Aubry Johnson Jr. sustained injuries due to an alleged hit-and-run accident at around 2:28 a.m. on Fairview Avenue.
Information released by Harris County officials says the collision took place just off the corner of Fairview Avenue and Montrose Boulevard.

According to authorities, Aubry Johnson Jr. was in a Toyota Camry going along Fairview. At Montrose, it appears a white Infiniti G37 ran a red light and crashed into the side of Johnson’s vehicle. The driver of the Infiniti then allegedly left the scene on foot, leaving Johnson behind with apparent spinal injuries.
Authorities indicate they’ve identified the suspect driver, and charges have been filed for failure to stop and render aid.

There are no other confirmed factors about the crash, however another detail included by county officials stands out. The victim apparently told authorities they’d seen the alleged runaway driver earlier in the night at a bar. If that’s true, there could be more than just a runaway driver that needs to be held accountable.
Through my career, a lot of the hit-and-runs that have come to me ended up involving drunk drivers who unsurprisingly ran to avoid getting in trouble for drunk drivers. That would then a lot of times lead to the discovery they were illegally over-served by a local establishment, meaning that business, too, had consequences to face.
Here, authorities have not made any allegations of alcohol contributing to the crash. But what are the odds authorities are accusing a driver of doing something a lot of drunk drivers do, say that person was seen at a bar, and alcohol wasn’t a factor? That’s not for me to say, of course, but it would be a shame if authorities never bothered to follow up on a potentially significant clue when the victim helped them skip a lot of the hard work and pointed them in the right direction.
