Ashley Brown Killed, 1 Injured in Car Accident on F.M. 359 in Fort Bend County, TX

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a northbound Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck occupied by a 21-year-old man failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly veered left of center, forcing a southbound Jeep Grand Cherokee to swerve onto the shoulder. The pickup truck still struck the side-view mirror of the Jeep and continued forward in the opposing lane of traffic. It was consequently involved in a head-on collision with the Dart.

Brown sustained fatal injuries due to the wreck, according to reports. The man from the Silverado suffered minor injuries, as well. Additional information pertaining to this incident is not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a driver crosses into oncoming traffic and causes a head-on collision, especially one that results in a fatality, it’s easy to assume the explanation is straightforward—perhaps a moment of distraction or a lapse in judgment. But in my experience, crashes like this are rarely that simple. To fully understand what happened on Farm to Market 359, and to ensure those affected aren’t left with lingering questions, there are three critical questions that should be asked.

First, did the authorities conduct a thorough investigation? This crash involved multiple vehicles and a series of events, including an evasive maneuver by another driver, a sideswipe, and then a head-on collision. That kind of sequence demands a careful reconstruction. Did investigators assess the roadway layout, signage, and line of sight? Were witness statements gathered to clarify how long the vehicle was left of center before impact? These are important details that often require more time and resources than many departments can spare. In those cases, an independent review may be necessary to ensure nothing was overlooked.

Second, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect may have played a role? When a vehicle leaves its lane unexpectedly, mechanical issues—such as steering failure, brake malfunction, or a sudden tire blowout—must be part of the conversation. These are not typically visible in the immediate aftermath of a crash and often go unrecognized unless a forensic inspection is performed. That inspection can only happen if the vehicle is preserved and made available for examination before any repairs or disposal take place.

Lastly, has all available electronic data been collected? Modern vehicles—like the pickup and passenger cars involved in this crash—are usually equipped with event data recorders that capture vital information: speed, braking, steering input, and throttle position just before impact. That data can confirm whether any corrective action was attempted or whether something went wrong inside the vehicle. Additionally, phone records, GPS data, and any nearby surveillance or dashcam footage can help fill in the timeline. But like physical evidence, electronic data is time-sensitive and must be secured quickly.

When a crash results in loss of life and the cause remains officially unknown, it’s not enough to rely on assumptions or preliminary conclusions. Asking these questions is the least that can be done to ensure that those affected by this crash get the clarity and closure they deserve.
