Accident Report

March 8, 2026, Ashley Arellano and one other person were injured in a car accident just after 1:45 a.m. along Interstate Highway 69.

According to authorities, 21-year-old Ashley Arellano was traveling in a southbound Ford Mustang on I-69 in the vicinity south of Hartwick Road when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the Mustang failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. A collision consequently occurred between the Mustang, a Nissan Altima occupied by a 47-year-old woman, and a Toyota Tundra.

Arellano reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. The woman from the Altima suffered minor injuries, as well, according to reports. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades. In that time, I’ve developed somewhat of a pet peeve. I find it annoying when the cause of an accident is listed as “failure to maintain lane of travel”. Why? Because that is not a cause; it is a symptom. What investigators need to do is get to be bottom of why the Mustang deviated from its lane.

Many people will assume it was the ubiquitous “driver error”. That would be a safe betting, considering the time of night. Driver distraction, fatigue, or even impairment are not uncommon. However, I’ve seen too many cases over the years where, contrary to how things appeared on the surface, it was underlying issues with the vehicle that were to blame, not the driver.

I’m not saying I know more than anyone else about this particular accident. I’m just pointing out that, hypothetically, that could be the case here. And until the investigation is complete, we can’t say it’s not. For example, what if the Mustang had a steering issue or a tire blowout? Either one would be probable.

Personally, I’m interested to see what turns up in the investigation. Hopefully the authorities are being thorough; if it seems like they are not being meticulous enough, then a third party investigation is always an option, as well, just to make sure all the bases are covered.
