How Did This Accident Occur?

I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades. In that time, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of pedestrian-involved accidents. Each one is distinct from others: places, people involved, time of day, weather and road conditions, types of vehicles involved, lighting, et cetera. Each element is something that authorities should be paying close attention to as they do their work.

Intersections are inherently dangerous places, even for cars, let alone pedestrians. This particular accident sparks my curiosity on a couple of different levels. To start, a quick search on Google Maps will tell you that this intersection is controlled by a traffic signal. I would love to know whether or not it was working properly at the time of the accident. Traffic lights, while incredible safety tools, are not infallible. It’s definitely something investigators should look into.

Additionally, the vehicle initially fled the scene. I would love to know why. What was going on inside that car at the time of the collision? Was the driver ill, fatigued, or impaired? He is a relatively young driver. Might this accident have been caused by his inexperience behind the wheel? Was he scared about repercussions? Now that the vehicle and its driver had been tracked down, the investigators can get answers to those questions, as well.

In the end, the loved ones of Asel Idris deserve more than a cursory investigation. A detail-oriented investigation resulting in evidence-backed answers will provide the clarity they need on their road to closure. If the authorities drop the ball and leave gaps in their work, then a third party investigation can always step and in take up that slack, if necessary.
