Details like these can obviously raise some familiar red flags, but I talk all the time on this blog about the importance of getting evidence before trying to draw any conclusions. An accident like this is no exception. There’s no telling when unusual factors could lead to an accident, and investigators need to have the experience and equipment to rule out or confirm such possibilities.
For example, a toll road here in Dallas used to see an unusually high number of wrong way driving incidents. A lot of preliminary reports just wrote the accidents off as drivers being reckless. After more thorough investigations, though, it was determined that the “Do Not Enter” warning signs were installed too high, so crews were sent out to lower them. Lo and behold, the number of wrong-way incidents significantly dropped.
I’m not saying that happened here, but if people just wrote all that off as drivers being reckless, the true problem wouldn’t have been fixed. That’s why it’s important for serious accidents like this one to be thoroughly investigated so that all the facts are clear. Whatever conclusion the evidence ultimately points to, there’s a family out there who deserves answers.
