People tend to think single-vehicle accidents are simple, but they can present some unique challenges. Generally speaking, authorities don’t always see them as a high priority, so they can easily slip through the cracks. As a result, officers can miss complex details, and those may not see the light of day unless there are more thorough independent investigations there to fill in the gaps.
For example, I handled a case not long ago where authorities blamed someone for not wearing a seatbelt. The family thought that was odd behavior for the victim, so they asked for us to look into things. As it turned out, authorities completely overlooked that the victim’s seatbelt had a defect. It came loose during the crash, meaning the victim was injured despite wearing their seatbelt properly.
I’m not suggesting that happened here, but it’s important folks understand authorities are not the end-all-be-all for what happened in a crash. They can make mistakes, and that’s why it can be helpful for folks to be proactive. If they feel things aren’t adding up, they can take necessary steps to make sure they’re going to get all the facts.
