Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

On top of the chaos that no doubt follows a fire of this severity, there’s the concern of how thorough investigations are into the cause of the fire. A lot of people get too caught up in wondering how one of the residents might have screwed up. However, there are other factors to consider. Condition of the property, whether or not smoke detectors were working, if there was a botched installation or repair job, if an appliance had an electrical defect, etc. Even if something seems unlikely, it needs attention. That’s not just to get the affected residents answers; it’s to help ensure this sort of thing doesn’t happen in the future.
