As simple as people tend to think accidents like this are, there can often be more complex factors that authorities aren’t always able or motivated to handle on their own. It’s important to consider this so that victims and families affected by a crash ensure they have other avenues through which to get answers.
For example, I handled a case a while back involving a driver who was accused of not wearing their seatbelt. The family found that to be highly unlikely, as the victim was very safety conscious. Police weren’t very open to hearing them out, so they wanted us to be a second set of eyes. Thanks to more thorough independent accident reconstructionists, we found that the victim’s seatbelt was defective. The victim was wearing their seatbelt properly, but the defect caused the pretensioner fail. Authorities didn’t know any better and just assumed (falsely) the victim did something wrong.
While not as common, these sorts of things happen. They need attention from experienced investigators, otherwise something important could slip through the cracks. Perhaps investigations here would only confirm what police have already found, but even that can provide much needed peace of mind.
