With a single-vehicle accident, there’s always a concern that authorities may not be taking the investigations seriously. They certainly can get clear answers for a victim’s loved ones, but some departments prioritize crashes like this below countless other responsibilities. That can lead to important details slipping through the cracks, and there may need to be safety nets in place to catch those details.
For example, I handled a crash not long ago where a family wanted a second set of eyes on the details. They were worried authorities made a mistake because they blamed the victim for not wearing their seatbelt, but the family knew the victim always wore their seatbelt. We had experienced accident reconstructionists examine the vehicle, and they discovered a serious defect with the seatbelt. The victim had been wearing it properly, but the defect caused the seatbelt to remain loose during the crash, and the victim was thrown from their seat. Authorities, who didn’t have the time, tools, or experience to catch something that complex, instead just jumped to conclusions and wrongfully blamed the victim.
I’m not suggesting a mistake like that happened here, but it’s not an unusual occurrence. That’s why it’s important folks consider the information they’re getting from investigators. If they feel the answers all make sense and don’t leave them with any kind of nagging doubts, then authorities likely did a good job. But if things don’t add up, folks aren’t getting clear answers, or if they just feel something’s off, then it would be reasonable to want another set of eyes on the details to make sure nothing is being overlooked.
