2 Injured in Alleged Intoxicated Driver Accident on Highway 87 in Galveston, TX

It appears four people were in a Ford Ecosport in the left lane going westbound on Highway 87. Somehow, a Toyota Tundra also going westbound failed to control speed, and it crashed into the back of the Ford.

A 30-year-old woman riding in the Ford reportedly had serious injuries due to the crash. The 37-year-old man driving the Ford had moderate injuries. Two others in the Ford may have had minor injuries. Details show that authorities recommended the Toyota driver be charged for intoxication assault. No other details have been released at this time.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If it’s true that this driver was intoxicated, my hope is authorities retraced their steps leading up to the crash. Put simply, 1:30 a.m. is a prime time for drunk drivers to be on their way home from a bar. Those bars often contribute to these crashes by over-serving customers. It’s illegal in Texas to over-serve patrons, and the law allows for bars who do so to potentially face charges, liability, fines, and license suspensions.

Unfortunately, though, this isn’t always a high priority for the authorities. They tend to put all of the focus on intoxicated drivers. I can’t begin to count how many of the hundreds of cases against alcohol providers our firm has handled where authorities only considered charges after we handed evidence to them on a silver platter.

Maybe investigations into this accident have been more thorough, but authorities here didn’t even clarify if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. Are they just playing this close to the chest? Or, are they not really giving the accident the attention it deserves.
