Brazoria County, TX — May 18, 2024, a man and three children were injured due to an alleged drunk driver accident at around 8:00 p.m. on County Road 257.
According to officials, the crash took place in the 8000 block of C.R. 257/Bluewater Highway, several miles east of Freeport.

Authorities said that 34-year-old Jennifer Marie Gonzalez was driving a Chevy Equinox westbound along the highway. In Gonzalez’s vehicle were a 29-year-old man and three children, a 12-year-old and two 6-year-olds. It appears that a Ford F-150 drove against westbound traffic and crashed head-on into Jennifer Gonzalez. As a result, the man in her vehicle and one of the 6-year-olds had apparently serious injuries. The other two kids had reportedly moderate injuries.

At this time, authorities say they recommended the Ford driver be charged for intoxication assault due to driving under the influence of alcohol. It wouldn’t surprise me if those allegations proved to be true, since wrong-way drivers are almost always drunk—not just drunk, but extremely drunk. After all, imagine the state of mind someone has to be in not to realize they’re on the wrong side of a divided roadway. It makes me wonder if there was a local alcohol provider who broke the law, over-served that driver, and contributed to all of this chaos.
What makes that possibility particularly important to consider is that authorities suggest the wrong-way driver was under 21. If a bar illegally over-serves a driver, of legal drinking age or not, they open themselves up to consequences. But if they’re doing that and serving underage customers, it could be a sign that the establishment is routinely breaking rules. They’ll likely continue to do so until more people get hurt.
In my experience across hundreds of cases litigated against negligent alcohol providers, once they’re actually held accountable for their actions, they clean up their act. But once authorities have a driver facing charges, they tend to move on to other responsibilities. That’s why I have to wonder if steps are being taken here to ensure all responsible parties are being held accountable. It wouldn’t be right for all this to happen only for someone responsible to be let off the hook simply because no one bothered looking for them.
