Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

People often see someone accused of doing something obviously wrong and think everything that follows will be completely open and shut. That’s rarely how things actually go. Simply put, authorities have their own priorities to consider, and they usually focus on filing charges or citations—not helping those involved in the crash get back on their feet.

Meanwhile, getting victims and families the help they need requires its own unique evidence and a completely separate legal process that a police investigation alone doesn’t often address. That’s why a lot of people end up looking for independent investigations to fill in the gaps. This can help to ensure there is a clear explanation of what went wrong and who’s responsible so there’s as little wiggle room as possible for any less-than-cooperative insurance adjusters.

In my experience, those who seek out these steps sooner fare better in getting a resolution they deserve. I sincerely doubt this accident would somehow prove to be an exception to that.
