Fort Bend County, TX — May 20, 2024, Afsha Elahi and a teenager were injured as the result of an alleged drunk driver accident that happened around 12:50 a.m. on Grand Parkway.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the crash happened on northbound lanes of Highway 99 in the area of Highland Knolls Drive.

It appears that 39-year-old Afsha Elahi was in a Toyota Corolla that had been traveling northbound along Grand Parkway. While doing so, an oncoming Chevy Sonic that was going the wrong way crashed head-on into Elahi’s vehicle. As a result, Elahi was seriously injured. The Sonic driver, an 18-year-old, reportedly also had serious injuries.

In recent statements, authorities allege that the driver of the Chevy Sonic was nearly three times the legal limit for drunk driving. If that’s true, it wouldn’t be at all surprising, since that’s the cause of the vast majority of wrong-way accidents. But what makes things particularly concerning is the age of the alleged drunk driver. It’s obviously not unheard of for teenagers to get their hands on alcohol. But the concern is if that alcohol came from a local establishment.
I’ve handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers over the years for over-serving people who cause accidents. Many of those establishments were breaking a lot more than just one law. That’s especially true when they were doing something as egregious as serving alcohol to underage customers. Alcohol providers like that are a danger to the community, and they need to be brought to light and held accountable just as drunk drivers are. Otherwise, they could simply continuing breaking the law until someone gets killed. So while it’s possible nothing like that happened here, an 18-year-old being almost three times the legal limit is absolutely the type of crash that warrants considering the incident from all angles to ensure nothing important slips through the cracks.
