As common as car accidents are, folks tend to assume authorities have them handled. The reality, though, is authorities sometimes let important details slip through the cracks. I get calls all the time from folks who feel authorities didn’t take their crash seriously, and that can make it challenging to get a fair resolution. That’s why it’s important to be proactive and follow up with authorities to gauge the sort of effort they’re making.
Did they spend time on the crash? Were they using proper equipment? Was the officer in charge experienced and well-trained for accident reconstruction? Did they investigate potential vehicle or road defects? Did they pull cellphone records? Were there any nearby cameras that caught the incident on video? Have authorities followed up with and recorded witness statements?
Ultimately, authorities may have satisfactory answers to these questions. Otherwise, if there’s more to the story, their answers may show that the accident needs a second set of eyes.
