Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a vehicle suddenly leaves the roadway and rolls several times, the question isn’t just how it happened but why. A single-vehicle crash may look straightforward on paper, but without careful attention, the real cause can be left unresolved.

1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
It isn’t clear whether investigators went beyond documenting the scene. A proper review would involve mapping the vehicle’s path, checking for skid or yaw marks, and considering whether the driver experienced distraction, fatigue, or a medical event. With rollovers, the dynamics are complex, and without detailed reconstruction work, important details about what led to the loss of control may never come to light.

2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
When a car leaves the road for no clear reason, a mechanical failure should always be on the table. A steering or suspension issue, brake malfunction, or even a tire blowout can cause sudden instability. In compact cars like the Ford Focus, loss of control can escalate quickly into a rollover. If the vehicle wasn’t inspected right away, any sign of a defect may now be gone.

3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Most modern vehicles carry event data recorders that log steering, braking, and speed in the moments before a crash. That information could help confirm whether the driver made a sudden maneuver, or if the vehicle itself behaved unpredictably. Investigators should also check GPS data, nearby surveillance footage, or phone records that could shed light on what was happening just before the car left the road.

Crashes that seem simple on the surface often hold unanswered questions beneath. It takes careful work and the right tools to separate assumptions from evidence and to understand what really set events in motion.

Key takeaways:

  • Rollovers require detailed crash reconstruction to uncover root causes.
  • Mechanical failures such as tire, steering, or brake issues may explain sudden loss of control.
  • Vehicle and digital data can provide insight that the physical scene alone cannot.
