Anderson County, TX — August 5, 2024, Abimael Santillan and Tanner Perez were killed due to a truck accident at around 11:00 p.m. along Highway 19.
Preliminary details released by officials say that the accident happened along northbound lanes of TX-19. It involved Palestine residents 21-year-old Abimael Santillan and 19-year-old Tanner Perez, who were in a Toyota Tundra, and a semi-truck.

Details at this time indicate that as the vehicles passed each other, a head-on collision occurred between the pickup and the semi. As a result, both Santillan and Perez sustained fatal injuries. The truck driver reportedly was not hurt. At this time, the exact cause of the accident remains unclear.

When it comes to head-on accidents, people tend to think investigations will be straight-forward. Shouldn’t it be obvious what happened based on where the vehicles end up after the crash? In reality, without proper accident reconstructions, the scenes of these accidents can be quite confusing.
For example, I had a case a while back where a car and an 18-wheeler crashed head-on, killing the car’s driver. Authorities shortly after determined that the car went left of center, leading to the accident. Something that didn’t sit right with us, though, was that the investigations were rather hasty, and the officer based their decision on testimony from the truck driver. We had the details looked over by professional accident reconstructionists, and the evidence told a different story entirely.
What actually happened was the 18-wheeler drifted across the center line at first. The victim, trying to avoid a collision, swerved to the left, but the 18-wheeler veered back into its original lane. That’s how the vehicles collided, and that’s why the victim’s car was on the wrong side of the road. Had there not been more thorough investigations, who knows if that ever would have come to light.
To be clear, that’s not a very common situation, and I’m not saying something similar happened here. It’s simply that these early reports likely only scratch the surface of what all led to the wreck. It’s possible that authorities are working diligently to get answers, and they’ll provide an explanation to the families of these victims that leaves them without any doubts or unanswered questions. If there are missing pieces, though, there may need to be more thorough independent investigations to fill in the gaps.
