Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Following any serious crash, it’s reasonable that the victims and families involved will be concerned about how their investigations are being handled. I get calls all the time from folks worried that authorities may not be giving their situation enough attention. That’s why I’ve found a few key questions that can help give victims and families a glimpse of what path lies ahead for them.

For example, did authorities take the time and resources needed to conduct a full reconstruction of the accident? Serious crashes require a detailed analysis of vehicle movements, impact points, and roadway conditions. If investigators didn’t take measurements, review camera footage, or speak with all potential witnesses, they may have overlooked something important.

Did investigators rule out potential vehicle defects? Brakes, steering components, and other vehicle systems can fail without warning, sometimes causing or worsening a crash. If authorities assume driver error without looking into these factors, they might miss an important piece of the puzzle.

Are authorities collecting all available electronic data? Surveillance cameras, traffic cams, and vehicle data recorders could provide valuable insight into what happened. Cellphone records might also indicate if distractions played a role. If this evidence isn’t secured quickly, it may be lost.

If authorities show they can address these concerns thoroughly, it’s a sign they’re taking the investigations seriously. However, if their responses come up short, then that can be a hint that a second set of eyes on the crash may reveal important details authorities overlooked. Either way, being proactive can help reassure families that they’re going to get the answers they deserve.
