How Did This Accident Occur?
When a car crashes with an 18-wheeler that’s going the same direction as it, distraction may be the first detail that jumps to a lot of people’s minds. As common as that is, it’s important that investigations cover other possibilities, even if they may seem unlikely.
I’ve handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases. I’ve seen just about everything that could possibly lead to a crash. Bad road conditions, tire failure, braking issues, faulty crash avoidance technology, missing signage, inappropriate speed limits, trucks without lights on their trailer, alcohol, medical emergencies—you name it, I’ve probably seen it.
As such, investigations need to be able to rule out or confirm these kinds of things. If authorities are able to do that on their own, that’s good. In my experience, though, a broad yet thorough investigation like that typically requires independent investigators who can dedicate the proper time and resources needed to turn over every possible stone. It wouldn’t be at all unusual if similar steps were needed here.
