With any serious accident, it’s important that there is a clear understanding of what investigators are looking for and how thorough they’re being in those efforts. As thorough as folks tend to assume authorities are after accidents like this, things aren’t always so cut-and-dry.
For example, I recall a case out of West Texas a while back where a man was t-boned by a truck and killed. Initial reports said the man went through a stop sign, leading to the collision. For weeks, that’s all the public knew. Well, a friend of the firm close to the case clued us in on what really happened. Apparently, TxDOT had been doing construction at the intersection, and they removed the stop signs in the process. When they left for the day, though, they forgot to replace the signs. So the intersection where the man allegedly ran the sign simply had no signs to run.
To be clear, that’s an unusual situation, and I’m not suggesting it happened here. My point is that when folks take early reports at face value, they’re likely to miss something important. It’s only after close, thorough accident reconstructions that anyone should begin to say they know what happened. Whether or not those efforts have been made here remains to be seen, but experience tells me there’s likely still more to this story.
