Accident Report

May 29, 2026, two people were injured due to an 18-wheeler accident at around 5:37 a.m. along Interstate 35.

Investigators said that the crash happened along southbound lanes of the interstate at the Loop 1604 interchange, northeast of San Antonio.

According to officials, a 34-year-old man was in a Mack truck going along the interstate. A 32-year-old man was in a Freightliner semi-truck going the same direction. A Volvo tractor-trailer going southbound reportedly failed to control speed, resulting in the three vehicles crashing.

The Mack driver reportedly had serious injuries, while the Freightliner driver reportedly had moderate injuries. Authorities did not say if any charges would be filed. Additional details are unavailable.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Authorities claim that an 18-wheeler failed to control speed, but that could happen for all kinds of reasons. It’s possible it’s as simple as a driver looking at their phone approaching slowed traffic. Or, it could be as challenging as a sudden mechanical issue due to an unknown vehicle defect. It’s important investigations are thorough regardless because even seemingly common factors can lead to far more complex issues beyond what’s immediately apparent at the crash scene.

For example, let’s say distracted driving led to the crash. I recall a truck accident a while back where that happened. A driver was on his phone texting, and it led to a crash. As open-and-shut as that seemed, it took secondary investigations behind the scenes to find out that the driver was responding to his employer. The driver’s supervisor would constantly hound drivers all day with calls and texts, and if drivers didn’t respond right away, they risked making their unreasonable boss mad and losing their job. This inevitably led to a driver taking his eyes off the road, and people got hurt as a result.

A problem like that doesn’t go away when a single driver is slapped on the wrist. It takes efforts to bring all of the facts to light and ensure the consequences fully address the problems that led to the crash. Not only is that what’s best for victims and families, but it’s also what’s best for all the other people on the road those issues might continue to put at risk.

Just to be clear, I am not saying anything so challenging led to this crash. My point is that it takes thorough accident reconstructions considering all possible factors to bring those possibilities to light or otherwise rule them out. If authorities are taking those steps here, that’s good. If not, then getting the full story might require more thorough independent investigations.
