An investigation is underway following an 18-wheeler accident that one person dead during the morning hours of December 27th. According to official reports, a Honda Accord was traveling in the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 18 near mile marker 25 when for unknown reasons the vehicle crossed into the opposite lanes and collided with a semi.
The driver of the Honda was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, and when first responders arrived on the scene they found that the driver had sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased. The Toyota’s passenger was seriously injured and transported to the hospital for treatment. At this time it remains unknown what caused the vehicle to drift into the oncoming lanes, however that information, along with the identities of those involved may be released in the future.

Investigators need to determine what caused the vehicle to drift out of its lane. Factors such as driver distraction, fatigue, impairment, or a medical emergency should be explored. Environmental conditions, including weather, road markings, and visibility, should also be examined to understand whether they played a role. A complete investigation must include physical evidence from the scene, such as skid marks, debris, and the positioning of the vehicles, as well as any available witness statements.
