Hackensack, NJ — May 22, 2024, two people were killed and four were injured after a multi-vehicle 18-wheeler accident on I-80.
According to initial details about the chain-reaction crash, it happened early Wednesday morning across both directions of travel in the area of Kennedy Street.
Investigators said that an initial collision occurred between an 18-wheeler and a Toyota SUV going eastbound along the interstate. As a result of this, the tractor-trailer went to the left, crashed through the barrier, and entered the path of a box truck and a GMC both going westbound.

Due to the accident, two people in the box truck were killed. Current reports have not identified the victim. Two people from the 18-wheeler, identified as a 63-year-old man and a 60-year-old man both from Texas, had reportedly serious injuries. Occupants of the GMC had reportedly minor injuries.
At this time, no further information can be confirmed.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
For a serious multi-vehicle crash like this, a lack of information this early on is to be expected. The key, though, is making sure steps are taken early to ensure nothing important slips through the cracks.
One significant challenge with these kinds of accidents is the sheer volume of evidence to be collected and examined. This includes not just the wreckage, but also dashcam footage, eyewitness accounts, and electronic data like the engine control module (ECM) records of vehicles involved. Each piece of evidence needs to be meticulously reviewed to understand the sequence of events or possibly identify any mechanical failures or driver errors.
Without a thorough investigation from professionals with experience and state-of-the-art tools, these crucial details can easily slip through the cracks. For victims and families in need of answers, this obviously won’t do. In my experience, that’s why these chaotic truck wrecks tend to fare better when in the hands of independent accident reconstructionists whose efforts usually go beyond the narrow scope of a typical investigation by the authorities. Hopefully similar efforts are being made here to ensure those involved are getting clear answers.
